Townsville People Support A Worthy Cause.

Branch 8 of the Knights of the Southern Cross needed a challenge. We contacted Caritas * Australia who told us that one of their most pressing needs was the re-construction of a Maternity Ward in Minova, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Minova is in an extremely poor area in the Kivu region, which is slowly recovering from a brutal civil war in which women and children were particularly victimised.

To help raise the funds required for this project, a Gala Dinner was held on 31st March 2012 at Jupiters Townsville, Hotel & Casino.

The event featured the amazing Ms Tara Moss as guest speaker. Tara is best known as an internationally admired and acclaimed Super Model, Best Selling Novelist, TV Presenter, Journalist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

The evening began with pre-dinner drinks, giving everyone an opportunity to meet other guests.

Our Bishop, Reverand Michael Putney DD, Bishop of our Townsville Diocese, was the first of the speakers for the evening. Bishop Michael has been a supporter of the project from the beginning. His words encouraged us all to reflect on the plight of people who simply have too little.

Caritas representative, Lulu Mitshabu, has first hand knowledge of the difficulties faced by expectant mothers in Minova. She captivated those present with her touching speech.

Tara spoke about her incredible, multi-faceted life and shared her experiences and ideas concerning her work in the area of women’s health issues.

The 1 RAR Band (nominated Australia's best military band by Bishop Michael) provided first class entertainment while guests enjoyed a superb meal from Jupiters new menu.

The band members were enthusiastic supporters of the event and offered their services unreservedly.

Our federal member, Ewen Jones, performed the task of auctioneer for the evening with flair and frivolity. Here, Ewen auctions a North Queensland Rugby League jersey to raise funds.

Tara assists Ewen to auction a personally signed, full set of her crime novels.

Honoured guests: Bishop Michael, Lulu and Tara Moss.

The Gala Charity Dinner was considered by all who attended a real highlight on the Townsville Social Calender for 2012.

The organising sub-committee finally relax and enjoy the night. L to R:  Mick Herron, Gavin Alexander, Steve Sutton, Angelo Coco and Nev O'Sullivan give the event the 'thumbs up'.

Here's a slideshow of photos from the evening ...

  1. Congratulations Knights of the Southern Cross on a fabulous looking event. So proud my dad was involved in such a great event for such a wonderful cause. Looks like a incredible night was had by all and think it's fantastic that you as a group have done such a special thing for others less fortunate.

  2. Congratulations on such a successful and enjoyable evening. All your hard work paid off handsomely. The organising sub-committee should take a bow. A "well done" to all the sponsers and members of the business community who supported this event as well.
